Grand Seiko celebrates Spring Drive anniversary with a pair of limited edition high quality fake watches

How long does it take you to invent a completely new watch movement? Five years? Ten years? If your answer is 27 years, you’re right. That’s how long it took Seiko to bring the Spring Drive movement from idea to reality. Originally conceived by Yoshikazu Akahane in the 1970s, the Spring Drive movement’s development was born out of an effort to solve the problems inherent in early quartz movements, but the project didn’t come to fruition until Baselworld 1999, when the first three Spring Drive watches were released to the public (unfortunately, Akahane wasn’t there to see the moment).

Five years later, Spring Drive finally arrived at Grand Seiko replica luxury watches with the introduction of the 9R series of movements in 2004. 20 years later, the 9R series of Spring Drive movements remain a core pillar of the Grand Seiko catalog, and GS is ready to celebrate the anniversary with two late fall limited editions. Both limited editions are powered by Grand Seiko 9R series movements, inspired by the fiery red hues that cover the Hotaka Mountains in the fall.

First up, we have the SBGY035, powered by the manually wound Caliber 9R31 Spring Drive movement. Similar in design and construction to the popular SBGY007 Omiwatari, this thin dress watch is inspired by the vivid leaves that cover the Hotaka landscape every fall. The deep red ombré finish is paired with a textured dial accented with rose gold. Next up is the SBGA499. A slightly more archetypal version of the Grand Seiko Spring Drive watch, the SBGA499 is powered by the original 9R movement, Caliber 9R65. Designed to evoke the vivid colors of the morning sun reflecting off the Hotaka Mountains, the SBGA499 delivers a winning twist on the classic Grand Seiko formula with a bright red sunray dial paired with rose gold and copper-pink accents (particularly on the sunken power reserve indicator).
